Chotto Desh

18th May, went to watch an adaptation of Desh by Akram Khan. It was amazing, the visual and body language of the whole dance piece is absolutely phenomenal. Audiences can imaugine who or what the dancer is doing without any voice or conversation to help. I think the interaction of the animation is perfect from the good choreography and rehearsals.

I have went to watch this dance is because I wanted to see how the choreographer explore the visual and body language of the dance as well as the interaction of the animation. I think that it will improve my performance in the future in the way I can reference his use of visual and body language. Using them as conversation between audience, music and dancer.

Marks of Dance

Throughout making my work I think they are experimental drawings as they have areas of development and exploration. The journey for this whole project has been a roller coaster ever since the beginning from the project proposal to researching for the project to creating and exploring with different skills and method to establish my project. I think it has been developed greatly from the very surface to educate the audience about dance and it has developed to audiences enjoying my work as a performance piece that was very positively pointed out from my animations in BA3a. I later developed the work to this concept and has gone to large scale mark making. I have understand that my passion for performing is not to educate audiences but to engage them to experience dance either from performance or involve themselves to it. Throughout my performances in the studio there are a few audiences that have stopped and curious about the things that I have been doing.

Different marks in dance

In addition throughout my exploration of this project. I also has acknowledge that the risk that I have took. To combine two different art practices and creating experimental drawings. I have learnt that illustration do not need to be figurative rather it needs rhythm and narrative in the images. As for my work the different marks that has been created shows the different rhythm. As well as from the recording and the different pattern and weight of the marks. The idea of not knowing the outcome of the work that I made was a risky and unpredictable take to my project. As I might not like the outcome or the outcome might not be relevant to the concept.

Process during this project

The process trough out the year was an interesting and exciting one. During the beginning of the term I thought that I do not need to collaborate with others as it is a hassle to me and they might not know or understand the concept of my work. In addition to that it worked out quite well for me during the first term, but after ‘Ampersand’ was introduced I quickly learnt that collaborating can help with my development of widens and feed in to my main project. During ‘Ampersand’ project we had the biggest technical problem that I have ever faced. Even though all of us worked really well with each other. If I have the same choice again with the same collaborators and more time. We could have solve the problem in more satisfied way. If we would have done the installation again we would not have solve the problem the way we did as we had discuss after the events. The other collaboration was with my photography peer Kamilia. It was a total opposite to what happen. We had the best chemistry and known the concept and idea really well, we did have a few disagreement and linguistic challenges but it has solve with discussion and making same agreements with each other. Collaborating with others give me opportunity that I would not have done when I am working alone.  The most exciting collaboration was with Steve, I think is because of the lack of friendship. The collaboration was a good platform for both our practise and friendship to grow. He for his communication with others trough his music while I develop my engagement of dance to others. The sense of development throughout the collaboration grow after we have started to play and dance live. The sense of conversation emerge throughout the performance in the way of the rhythm in the music and dance.

Improvements and Strength

'Ampersand' Installation mock up
Installation mock up

I think my strength was that I can push troughs the different difficult problem such as the technical problems as well as the emotions problem that has occur during the whole process. The different collaboration has thought me a lot in the sense of concept development and I do not need to keep the idea to one and could be change for the better. However, I think that my communication skills need to be better because I was quite short tempered when things did not go the way that planned has set such as the difficulty in deciding the place for my ‘Ampersand’ installation placement. I was not patient enough with the curation team as they have done all the build and set up for the show.

My challenge for obtaining and working with my own brief is that I have to schedule my time well because it have to accommodate the other collaborators time as well because not everyone is available at the same time.

application and exit strategy

Why I apply for this event?

I apply for this event is because it is a good event for my practice. I will be interesting for me to experience and develop my practise to the public and see how they will react to my dance piece. It gives me the opportunity to publicise my work in a local place in hoping for more opportunity in the future.

Statement for apply this event.

My practice obtain a musician and a dancer to explore the movements of dance through materials and music interpretation. My concept is to create performances to encourage and involve the audiences to experience dance as an activity or a show. My intention is to show that dance can be as naive as a child’s play and enjoyment of dance. The performance is a 5-10 minutes improvisational and experimental dance responding to a guitar score. The dance will be performed on a large piece of paper with paint experimenting an interpenetration score of a guitar. This piece is to attract the attention of the audiences to appreciate the fun side of dance rather than just the serious side of the dance performance.

What happen after university?

I applied to the event and also have done an YCN competition to show the wide range of skills that I obtained and willing to explore. I have contacted the Norfolk Dance Art Collective, Dance East in Ipswich and many more. Having this connection it will give me opportunity to collaborate or to create work for them in the near future.

I am also looking at entering to some drawings competition such as the Jerwood Drawing competition because I think that the work have the sense of expression as the marks that has been created by the movements give it character.

Besides opportunities and competitions, I also have created an online show to sell my artwork as a freelancing artist. The book that I have created for experiments act as an artist book for me. It show the best of the drawings that I have done. I have planned to sell the photos that I have created from my YCN project and create more images with me performing because I think it is more interesting and shows my concept better as I am performing that will initiate the audiences to involve in dance.

Concept for my graduation exibition

proposal.jpg

This is my proposal for my exhibition place in the studio. I think that it is very adventurous but it believe that it shows the potential for the work to be exhibited in a space.I wanted to show the different aspect of my work such as from the performance wise, the large images to the micro images of the marks on a plint.

After Chris’s tutorial i have created a sequence for the micro images suggesting a rhythm. I agree with Chris that the when the images is placed in sequence rhythm, because the can imitate the documentation of the music score or the dance movements.

Chris Tutorial

The last tutorial that has been organised for us is with Chris and he has suggested some useful information and ideas for my exhibition. Chris suggestion is to be reworking the marks that i have made or use just one singular colour to show the different layers of movements that could be shown with the marks.

Throughout our discussion he thinks that the idea is very brave, adventurous and interesting in how it would be developed. He also suggest that maybe using some extension of the body to show the different marks that could be created. I agree with his suggestion that I could use an extension of the body to show the different marks that might show the narrative of the dance process.

When I show the images of micro images of the large marks, he also suggest to create a narrative or a rhythm to the collection so it make it more interesting rather then just collection of the work. It will also shows the connection of dance and music in reflecting on the documentation of music score and the documentation of dance.

Portfolio

https://sumiesart.wixsite.com/danceproject

When I decided to create a digital, I am more happy with the decision because of how the movements and my concept could be conveyed in a better way. The video shows the process while the still images tells the narrative of the movements and marks that I have created from.

I think that if I have not had a tutorial with George I would not have made this decision and remotivated myself to my project. She reassure me that i should not just play safe and keep exploring all the options that is out there that i have not thought of.

The decision of making my portfolio digital can be more excess able to everyone with the use of QR code on the business card, this can leads for a wide range of audience from different age range that have obtain technology.

Archive Collection

I have been think in how i could present my large pieces of work and making it more portable. Selecting the most interesting marks and composing the most exciting composition to the marks. I did not think of any sequence to the collection.

I have handmade the box for the collection because it will make the collection looks more fitted to itself and more personalised.

I think that the box and the collection looks good at itself, but i think that the collection does not have sequence it might have not given an impact that I wanted to have from the collection to my large pieces of work. I think it needs a relationship between them and my videos that i have made.

I wanted the box to be interact with, this is for the audiences to appreciate and enjoy. It will have a description of the work and why i have make them into A3 display images.

Rules

1. Create a sequence of rhythm that have a beginning, climax and an end.

2. Using the images creating sequence of 6 images.

3. Take a photo of it and #rhythmofdance in instagam.

I have written the rule to act as an interaction and the first experience of dance from the audience and in hoping they will get involve in dance in the future coming.

George tutorial

I went in to the tutorial totally defeated and thought that I have lost motivation because of the amount of documentation I have been doing throughout Easter holidays that had brought me to a stop to this project. However, when I have a tutorial with George she remotivated me and encourage me to explore more of what I had done so far.

I bought my books to George’s tutorial and she likes the book as a artist book but not a portfolio. She thinks that the books have lack of rhythms and narrative to them.

Later I shown her some of the recording of the dance performance with Steve (musician). She thinks that the recordings are more interesting to look at and the video shows better as a portfolio.

Reflective time

I do agree with George about the books that I have made they seem to be just a simply good looking book. The longer I have looked at the books the more I dislike the book as I think it removed the movements element to the image.

I do also think that the movements could be shown better with the videos and as I have added the element of music it will make more sense to use a digital platform as my portfolio as it will convey all of my concept and ideas.

Logbook experiment ( portfolio)

i have been thinking of how I want my portfolio to look like. I thought that a book might be able to convey my concept. I have chosen Japanese book binding method is because it shows the exciting and beautiful binding that they can create. I have tried to create some books with full bleed image and some sectioned off the marks to the page.

img_20170404_220233.jpg

I think the experiment is interesting and give the book more character.

i have scanned my mark images I have made and made them into book to be presented as my portfolio. I think it does show the sense of movement. However I think it does need some explanations of the project and I think it is not as successful if it needs explanation which it might ruin the aesthetic look of the book and the collection.

The book is not relevant for portfolio but it is more relevant for an artist book, this gave me opportunity to sell my book online as my personal artist book.

Live Performance

After the music responding to the performance and I am very happy with the different responds that I have obtained from my peers and tutors, they think that the videos are exciting and adventurous. They also think that the work is very playful and fun as it seem like a exciting performance to watch.

Me and Steve have agreed to times to create work from live and see how the music responding to the dance.

I think the the live performance is much better than the recorded responds from my performance. The live performance shows the connection between the dancer and the musician can be seen really clearly. I think that the connection between two artists grow ever since the first performance. This leads to the decision for the final show in how I could present my work.

In this performance as the connection grow we have a good sense of how each other work and what we respond to the best.

From my point of view for this project i think it has been developed into a performance rather then a documentation of movements. It has been developed into a work where people would enjoy and i wanted to encourage the audiences to experience dance no matter they go to watch a performance or attend some events. I believe that the joy that i have while i am dancing will be able to transfer to the audiences.

The videos that i have made which intend to show the joy and playfulness of the dance convey more successful from the videos with the primary coloured paints because of the colour impact that it has. I think that the mark making with dance has improved and the materials that i have used convey dance movements very well no matter if we see it from far or close up to inspect the piece.
